Wild west game part 2

Posted by BW Designs on January 20, 2012 at 2:00 AM Comments comments (0)

For wild west each side rolls for the “drop” the side who can choose either to go first or second.

Jamie won the drop for the first few rounds.

Then the pain started, Jamie advanced (or skulked) pinky and reb through the orchard towards the corral, the remainder of his posse headed towards the wagon behind bobs gun store, Hanna heading to the water tower.

My Posse then moved mainly to find some cover behind a tree and the outhouse behind the jail.

In the Shooting phases and Rusty dies hiding behind the outhouse door after running out of bullets. Lefty is hit but doesn’t take a wound and runs for his life behind the jail. Stoop is hit but shrugs it off like a real man. In the corral, Django and Makepeace take a hail of fire from the orchard with Django dying after being shot by Preacher and Makepeace running for better cover after shrugging of a hit. Lefty dies to a well aimed shot from Pinky.

With three of my possie gunned down in the first few turns the Mid game see’s my possie pulling back to the front of the jail. Two Guns and Grandpa trying to cut up Clint the sheriff after both being hit but surviving and running off to hide, then coming back to attack the opposing sheriff who had been left alone after his friends had run off. This ended up with Grandpa getting gunned down inch’s from the sheriff and Clint the sheriff retreating to the front of the gaol. Hanna abandons climbing the water tower as most of my possie has run away.

End game with my possie hiding behind the water trough and hitching post in front of the jail outnumbered.

Now it gets up close and personal where my possies lack of hand to hand weapons begins to tell against me.

Major stabs Duke and kills him, Clint is surrounded and fights of his attackers several times and takes a wound before in the final round taking two more from the major and dying (Clint being a hero has 3 wounds rather than one like the rest of his possie.) Makepeace kills Two Guns with a right hook before going down to a quick knife thrust from Preacher.

James in the middle of the street outnumbered two to one fights off Hanna and Pinky and manages to kill Hanna before being sliced into small squares by Pinky.

End game

The game ends with me” heading for the hills” with only two of my possie left and Jamie’s possie with five left and control of the table. Lack of knifes for my possie and terrible shooting, plus failing some important “duck for cover” rolls. Duck for cover happens when a fighter is hit but doesn’t die or if someone close to him dies they take a morale test, if failed they run for cover often leaving a possie member all alone.

Great game though the early loss of 3 men did leave me very few options, and Jamie played like a demon 

Wild Western shoot out 28mm vendetta scenario

Western shoot out 28mm vendetta scenario. using the War hammer westerns rules.

The game requires you to buy up team members for your "possie" each team member cost is dependent on their skill level and what they are armed with.

Because it was part of an ongoing campaign this game was a make or brake for my team running short on cash and weapons. The dice hate me I tells ya.

The first Lawman Possie (mine) was made up of a

A sheriff, The man in charge.

Clint with a 6 gun

Deputies lesser hero's but still tough.

Rusty with a sawn-off shot gun

James with 2 six guns

Lefty with a 6 gun.

vigilantes together with citizens below are the low powered henchmen cheep but with low stat's there to take a bullet for the main players. (Mooks:))

Makepeace with a rifle

upstanding citizens

Duke

Django

and Stoop all 3 with six guns

The second Lawman Possie was made up of a

sheriff

the Major with a repeating rifle

Deputies

Reb with a heavy pistol.

2 Guns mc graw with 2 six guns well naturally

vigilantes

Hanna with a rifle

preacher with a sawn-off shotgun

Pinky with 2 six guns

and an upstanding the citizen

Grandpa

all members of the 2nd possie had a knife as well Grandpa being a cranky old man was armed only with a knife.

Table 3' x 3' , trees and rocky outcrops made by Fernvale scenic’s (see in the links page) almost all painting and buildings by BW designs.

Table at set up. The first possie has set up around the jail (corral, behind jail and behind the trees next door to bobs guns). Second possie broken up into two groups on in orchard and other opposite table corner.

On the painting table at the moment.

Currently painting up two blood bowl teams, skaven with a tracked steam powered metal tailed hero, and a Norse looking team with a huge troll hero? one of them I think by an italian company. very nice figures I will post them up when completed.

A selection of 2 mm towns for Dystopian wars.

A selection of 3 mm towns for Dystopian wars. Yes I know some one can't make up their minds on which scale looks best. Pictures on the table with both towns in place and you can decide which looks best. Looser gets sold off :)

Flames of war, WWII on a horse.

Posted by BW Designs on January 8, 2012 at 10:25 PM Comments comments (0)

I decided to use a Hungarian huszar cavalry list for  a one day mid war flames of war comp up near brisbane on the weekend.

I have to say cavalry are fun and heart in the mouth type of army that can either win big or loose big but will always make you think.

Game one

against an english desert armoured company with shermans on a 4 x 4 city table misssion hast assault .... I think. 6-1 win my way tanks fell left right and centre to my artillary and the enemy infantry falling to my horse mounted Heavy machine guns on the 4th turn. The enemy tanks taking heavy losses while assaulting my engineers wholed up in a bulding and loosing a trickle of tanks to the german allies stugs.

Game two.

against a monster sized Italian russian front infantry list with a german pk 40 platoon alpini monster sized platoon and 3 tiny tanks. 3-3 draw. My cav assaulting his left flank with stug support and pounding his line of infantry with my artillary. on the right his assault grinding to a halt pinned and looking second hand by the end of the game.

high lights, loosing two stugs to tiny tanks on the last turn with some poor rolling on my part, and my cavalry attack on the right failing twice to do the job. fun game. fair fight mission

Game three

soviet naval infantry.

a second tar baby army to fight against. I got stuck in on the right flank using some buildings in the centre and a big wheat field on the right flank as cover for both platoons of the cavalry. In the end I didn't grind throught enoughof the russians to make a big enough dint only taking out one platoon/company. 5-2 against me fun game but wasn't to be. retreat mission.

In all three games I had a chance. With game two I could have sat back for a turn or two and pounded them with artillary for a few more turns which could have payed off but then again maybe not. Game three not sure what I could have done better as it was a tough ask and my opponent kew his stuff.

Horses are great so long as you don't have to clean up after them :-)

Another batch of Italians done and it's 33C inside

Posted by BW Designs on January 8, 2012 at 10:10 PM Comments comments (0)

So another batch of flames of war Italians done and sent to their new owner. I do like the italians in flames of war, they require a different mindset to play well with, but they can do well if you know what you are doing. The main trouble is now that some of the battle front figures are not the best and can be quite challanging to paint well and the amount of miscasts are again quite high since they shifted production to Malaysia.

No painting today though It's 33-34 inside with the fan going flat out.

DBMM Competition report for Wintercon July 2011

Posted by BW Designs on December 22, 2011 at 8:30 AM Comments comments (0)

Here's a write up that I found I had done for a competition in July this year. It was a DBMM (15mm ancients, 400 point games), in canberra ACT oz.

The weekend was good fun, even though my match practice was shown to be sadly lacking.

As a rough guide if your not familiar with DBMM terms this list below explains things when reading the following terms are the key

Kn =knights

Cv = Cavalry non knight or Light horse mounted

Lh = Light horse (cloud of dispersed cavalry)

sp = spear armed heavy foot

Ps = Psiloi (cloud of dispersed light infantry)

Bd = Blade (heavy infantry with er blade)

Ax = Auxillia medium infantry ( loose formation infantry)

Bw = Bow armed infantry in closer formation than Ps shooters

Bg =baggage (important for army morale)

reg = regular trained troops (do what they are told quicker you hope)

Irreg = irregular untrained or poorly trained troops

S/O/I/F being grades superior, ordinary, inferior and fast.

For wintercon I decided to run Lusignan Cypriots, a long time favoriteof mine, for no other reason than I'm the only person I have ever seen that uses them.

command a

reg kn s sub gen

6 irreg bw o

8 irreg sp i

4 reg bd o

4 reg bw o

8 irreg ps o

command b

reg kn s sub gen

8 irreg lh s

6 irreg ax s

4 irreg bw o

command c

irreg cinc kn o

7 irreg kn o

5 irreg lh o

6 hd 0

command d

6 baggage

stratagies

scout

feigned flight.

as I live in the middle of nowhere I don't get to play much maybe 3-4 games in

the last 5 months or so, so an untested list.

Over the weekend the list played ok but due to the cinc having too much to do,

it was handicapped a little when I had to redeploy.

game 1 Lucy attacking siamese my commands deploying b a c

terrain woods, hills and scrub scattered around the edges.

the siamese deploying in a large steam roller in the centre.

against pauls siamese, paul explained that this was his second game ever of mm

so it was a relaxed game while we went through the rules. The game ending up

with the lh s lined up to charge the mass in the rear of the blob, the ax s

killing off the left flank, the knights and lh o killing off the ax and blade on

the right . In the centre the bow had killed off a few ps, enough to give me a

14-11 by the end of the round.

game 2 Lucy attacking pre feudal spanish. my commands deploying c a b

terrain woods, hills and scrub scattered around the edges and a hill on my side

near the centre.

Gerry's spanish deployed in four commands knight command, foot command with blade

bow, A grenadine? ally and a cav lh command.

I started by messing up my setup, and spending the rest of the game trying to

get out of the hole I had dug for myself with the knights.

The game finishing up with the knights killing off the opposing knight command

the foot command not doing much just covering the flank of the knights with a

few of the ps and coming of the hill to pressure the infantry. The lh command

took on two commands and made a few kills on both the ally and the opposing lh

command. When the opposing knight command broke I think it killed off the ally

and the cav commands who where by this time disheartened.

game 3 Lucy defending against caroling franks. my commands deploying a c b

terrain a sea down my left flank, a wood near the center line on the left flank

, a scrubby hill pointing towards me in the centre (both on the franks side) and

a scrubby hill on my centre right flank.

The winter attack by the franks was delayed by two seasons until summer, then

the time of the attack was delayed until 8pm at night. We gfought in daylight the next day.

The franks set up with a knight command behind the wood, the allies warband on

the projecting hill then the other knight command and the ally light horse

command on the right flank.

My first pip dice were 1,1 and 2 for the first couple of turns.

On the other side the FLDT (Frankish Line Dancing Team) went into action with

columns shooting of into different directions to load up against my right flank.

My knight command desperately trying to deploy to my right but in the end

getting caught with most of the knights to the right of the the hill but some

pinned by the hill and the slowly advancing warbandmoving along the ridge. The

lh from my knight command had by this time managed to pin the end of the enemy

knights behind the wood to stop them redeploying on the other side of the hill.

My foot command sneaking some ps almost to the other side of the table to help

my LH against the enemy knights. On my right the Lh s launched a charge on the

opposing LH and lost most of the fights but one. This was enough to use my Fiend

Flight and slow the enemy down for a turn or two. There was then a huge scrum

for a few turns me piling on the pressure but slowly loosing to the superior

numbers and unable to feed anymore elements to the right side of the table.

Time called with my knight and lh commands looking pretty sad, but hanging on

Just.

poor setup, poor terrain selection and good play by aron. Aron manoeuvring his

knights very well. 11-14 to Aron.

game 4 Lucy defending against Gregs early crusaders. my commands deploying b a c

terrain a sea down my left flank, a wood near the centre line on the left

flank, nothing else really playing a part in the battle.

Greg rolled for his delayed command (which came on, on the third or fourth

bound)

After I had set up, Greg deployed in the far right corner from the sea. angling

his spear backed up by ps, then bow between the knight column and the spear.

Then an allied knight command in colum and his byzantine light horse ally on the

flank.

My first turn I spent much like the rest, redeploying to meet the flank march of

the fourth command (knights bow spear) and putting pressure onto the on table

spear knight command without activating the unreliable knight command.

I lost a few knights to the flank march but my overlapped rear ended cinc was

able to throw off his attackers and then kill his opponent before his command

broke to the attentions of the byzantine and crusader knights.

The light horse command marching across the field to take out all the enemy bow

on the flank of the enemy knights and to kill a few knights. The commander of

the infantry command marched up with his regular infantry in support of the LH

command and the flank of the knights. My infantry commander on the last turn

killing a knight to brake the enemy cinc's command on the last turn and last

dice roll to end up on 6 points each with a 13 /12 to Greg.

Greg had a plan that worked well, and I tried to box him up in his corner.

I'm not sure how things would have gone if the game had gone on further, Greg

wasn't far from my baggage but my infantry and lh were in good positions.

Interesting weekend, a 2400km drive and yet another night attack (I am oh so

over them) and a list that wasn't the best.

Thanks to all my opponents and congratulations to Aron for a well deserved win.

If anyone has an idea on how to make the list better inspite of my leadership, I

would love to hear it.

Cheers

Chris.

Flames of war campaign rules update still not finished.

The flames of war campaign rules are taking a little more time to fix up as a downloadable document than I thought they would. I'll post again as soon as I think they are worth releasing to the world.

Cheers
